World Day Against Child Labor

Today, June 12, is World Day Against Child Labor Day. Declared by the International Labor Organization (ILO), the ILO is promoting child labor awareness. Children of impoverished countries are forced to work over attending school to help their families. The ILO is trying to promote awareness and allow these children to have a chance to be educated before being forced to work.

"The ILO has estimated that some 165 million children between the ages of 5 and 14 are involved in child labour. Many of these children work long hours, often in dangerous conditions" (ILO, http://www.ilo.org/ipec/Campaignandadvocacy/WDACL/2008/lang--en/index.htm). The ILO also goes on to state that there are many steps along the way to give educational access to these children. Among these include a provision to free education, getting over the barriers of girls' education, and raising public awareness of child labor.
